- What is unique about the University of California, Irvine’s Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses?
UC Irvine’s online AP and Honors courses are approved by the University of California as meeting the “a-g” subject requirements for admission to the University of California.
Our AP and Honors online curricula was originally developed by University of California College Prep Online (UCCP) and has a proven track record of preparing students for success on the AP exams as well as helping students become eligible for admission to four-year colleges and universities.
UC Irvine’s online AP courses are instructor-led, taught by credentialed teachers approved by the University of California.
Each UC faculty developed course is designed to engage students utilizing multi-media including video, flash presentations, games, voiced narrative, photos and text. - Does the University of California, Irvine partner with schools and districts to offer AP and Honors online courses?
Yes. UC Irvine Extension is able to partner with schools to offer their students online, instructor-led AP and Honors courses through a partnership agreement. Schools that enroll 5 or more students will receive discounts on the per course enrollment fees.
To learn more about discounts and partnership opportunities with UC Irvine Extension, please contact Erica Offutt at unex-educate@uci.edu. - How will students’ progress be monitored?
Our online AP and Honors instructors will create weekly graded activities for students, host at least one online discussion forum per week, grade, evaluate, and provide students with feedback on assignments within 48 hours of submission.
In addition, our instructors will provide a notice of the student’s activity and performance weekly to the student, parent, appointed school administrator/”monitor,” or other legally authorized guardian or responsible party. - What is expected from the High School to support students enrolled in these courses?
The University recommends the appointment of a “monitor” to facilitate the student’s progress through the course(s). The monitor would be responsible for helping the student to stay on track by encouraging frequent e-mail contact with the instructor, completing and submission of assignments on time, and actively participating in course forums. In addition, schools should ensure that students have exclusive and consistent access to the Internet for at least one instructional period per day. The University would also recommend that the monitor remind students of examination dates and either arrange for a proctor or serve as the proctor for the final examinations. - Are textbooks required?
Textbooks are required for UC Irvine’s AP and Honors online courses. Once a student enrolls in a course and pays the fees, textbook information will be included on the enrollment confirmation form.
Students are urged to order textbooks immediately after enrolling in a course to ensure that they arrive in time for the first day of class.
If textbooks are not available from the participating high school, books will be made available for students to purchase from the UC Irvine Bookstore.
Visit the UC Irvine Bookstore. - What are the technical requirements for students to participate in a UC Irvine online course?
For a complete list, please read our Technical Requirements. - How are exams given?
Quizzes and exams will be scheduled by the instructor. Students will access the quizzes and exams from the online course, or the instructor will release a quiz or exam via e-mail. The instructor will be required to grade the quiz or exam and post a grade for the student within 48 hours of completion.
The final examination will be the only proctored exam. Schools that are partnering with UC Irvine Extension to offer AP and Honors courses to students will be required to proctor exams.
The Proctor Identification Form (to be completed by the student) must be completed and returned to UC Irvine Extension prior to taking the final examination. These forms should be returned to Erica Offutt at unex-educate@uci.edu or to UC Irvine Extension, P.O. Box 6050, Irvine, CA 92616-6050, ATTN: Erica Offutt.
The following materials have been developed for students and proctors to assist in the final examination: Student instructions for final examination. - How do students enroll?
