All UC Visiting students will enroll in the 4-unit (quarter) online course described here. The course is a regular UCI undergraduate course, but you will receive a transcript from UCI Extension. The course opens for instruction beginning on May 1, 2010, however you will begin your actual coursework on a rolling basis, depending on when you choose to begin your Service Learning Project. You will likely begin your coursework 2-3 weeks prior to your departure date.
For example, if you find a Service Learning Project in Australia that begins on July 15, you may not actually begin your online coursework until as late as July 1 (2 weeks prior to your departure date). The online course will be open as early as May 1st so you have the option to look around and get started on your coursework, but you are not required to begin until 2 weeks prior to your departure. You will then complete the remaining online coursework after returning home from your Service Learning Project.
Please note that you will not enroll in a Service Learning Project through UCI. UCI does not endorse any specific organization or project. You will only enroll in the online course through UCI, which contains a required Service Learning abroad component. It is up to you to find your own project, and we recommend that you do this before signing up for the course.
