How to Enroll
Step One: Complete the "Engaging Globally" course enrollment form
The course opens for instruction beginning on May 1, 2010, but you will begin your actual coursework on a rolling basis, depending on when you choose to begin your Service Learning Project. As you plan, remember that there is coursework to complete online prior to participating in your chosen service-learning project.
The deadline for enrolling in the course is May 1, 2010 or 65 days prior to your Service Learning Project departure date, whichever is sooner. We recommend that you try to enroll in the course as early as possible.
Download and print the enrollment form.
Step Two: Include Your Payment
The total fee for the 4-unit course is $1,100 for non-UC students. You must include this payment with your enrollment form. This fee is only for your online course instruction and UC units. This fee does not include any travel abroad component.
The $1100 fee includes a $150 non-refundable administration fee. All other fees are refundable until June 1.
Step Three: Mail Your Enrollment Form
Mail or drop off your enrollment in person at the Summer Session Special Programs Office. Our office is open Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm. We are located in University Extension, Bldg. A (#231 on campus map).
Our mailing address is:

Step Four: Find a Service Learning Project Abroad
As part of the online course, Engaging Globally, you will be required to participate in an on-site Service Learning Project. We are here to help, but UCI does not organize or offer Service Learning Projects abroad. It is your responsibility to find and enroll in a Service Learning Project Abroad. You should find and enroll in a service learning project as soon as possible, and no later than 65 days prior to your desired departure date. Be sure to find a Service Learning Project that begins no earlier than May 15, 2010 and ends no later than September 15, 2010.
In order to assign you to the proper online course section, you will need to tell us your Service Learning departure date. It is best to indicate this on the course enrollment form, but you can also tell us later if you need to (but not less than 65 days prior to your departure).

Fees
Course Fee: $1,100
($950 course fee + $150 non-refundable administration fee)
Fees for your Service Learning Project are due directly to the organization you choose to volunteer with. UCI is not involved in the enrollment or fee collection process for your desired Service Learning project.
Financial Aid
Non-UC students have two options for financial aid. The first option would be to check with your home institution to see if they are able to award you financial aid for a summer course taken through a different University.
Your second option would be to apply on your own for private credit-based alternative student loans, and request that UC Irvine Extension be your sponsoring intuition. There is no need to complete a FAFSA since you are not applying for federal financial aid. UC Irvine Extension is an approved training institution for the following private credit-based alternative student loans to help students enrolled through UCI Extension cover the cost of enrolling in courses. UCI Extension offers the following student loan options:
Through these loans, you may also apply for required specific course-related expenditures (such as your Service Learning Project). Credit decisions to fund the loan are made entirely by Citibank and Wells Fargo. Interest rates, fees, and repayment schedules vary from one lender to another and you are encouraged to compare information between the lending institutions. You may also contact their own bank as a possibility of funding their continuing education studies. To receive disbursement of the approved loan, you must enroll or be enrolled in the Engaging Globally course by the disbursement date and remain in good academic standing.
Cancellations & Refunds
Online Course
You may drop your course through one of the following methods: in-person at the UC Irvine Extension Student Services Office, by mail, by faxing your request to (949) 824-2090, or by e-mailing your request to engaging-globally@unx.uci.edu. Please include your name, the course title, the course registration number, your phone number and e-mail address. Failure to include all the necessary information may delay processing.
In order to receive a refund of your course fees, you must drop by the course fee refund date of June 1. The final deadline for dropping your online course is the reported date of departure for your Service Learning Project. If you do not submit the Course Change Request by your reported departure date, a grade or “No Report” notation may appear on your transcript.
Example: Your departure date is July 15
You can drop your online course as late as July 15 without any academic penalties. If you drop June 1st or earlier, you will receive a refund for your course fees. If you drop between June 2nd and July 15th you will not receive any course fee refunds.
Failing to attend class, stopping payment on checks or charge cards, or submitting checks that are not honored by the bank does not constitute a proper withdrawal from courses, nor proper cancellation of enrollment. Stopping payment delays the withdrawal process and creates unnecessary problems with student records. In addition, changes in your student status do not automatically drop you from your course.
If you paid by credit card and are entitled to a refund, your credit card will be credited. If you paid with cash, check, money order, or cashier’s check, you will receive a check from the University Accounting Office. Most online requests will be processed immediately; others may take up to 6-8 weeks from the date you drop. If you are a financial aid student for the summer, paid summer fees out of pocket, and are entitled to a refund, your refund will be processed at the end of the summer.
Non-refundable Administration Fee
The $150 administration fee required of all students is not refundable.
Deadlines for Course Fee Refunds
Course fees are refundable until June 1. No refunds for course fees will be issued after this date.
Service Learning Project
You do not enroll in a Service Learning Project through UCI. You will only enroll in the online course through UCI, which contains a required Service Learning abroad component. Be sure to check with your Service Learning Project organization for their cancellation and refund policies.
Transcripts & Grades
Non-UC students are enrolled in the online course through UCI Extension, but the course you are taking is a regular UCI course. UCI Extension will issue your transcript.
A transcript of your academic record will be released by UCI Extension only upon receipt of a signed request or electronic request from you authorizing the release. The fee is $13.00 a copy. You may order a transcript online by logging in to My Account; by downloading, completing, and submitting the Transcript Request Form; or you may submit a signature request, enclosing payment, to the Records Office, UC Irvine Extension, PO Box 6050, Irvine, CA, 92616-6050. Make checks payable to: UC Regents. MasterCard, Visa, or American Express users provide account number, expiration date, and signature to authorize charge. Requests may also be faxed to (949) 824-2090. Payment for fax requests must be by credit card.
To avoid delay when requesting transcripts please include:
- Full name
- Other names under which you have enrolled
- Social security number*
- Birthdate*
- Approximate dates of attendance
- Address(es) where transcripts are to be sent
- Phone number to contact you for any questions
*Providing your Social Security Number and birthdate is voluntary but important to ensure accurate transcripts.
When you order a transcript to be sent to another college, university, or agency, it is important for you to provide a complete mailing address to ensure delivery to the correct office. At least two weeks should be allowed for a transcript to be received by another institution or agency.
All outstanding debts to the UCI must be paid in full before a transcript will be released
