Living Arrangements
Living arrangements vary depending on the Service Learning Project and organization you choose. You might:
- Join a host family in Costa Rica
- Backpack in New Zealand
- Experience a local-style hut in Thailand or a traditional cabana in Ecuador
- Live in a Research Station in Australia
Meals
Meals on Service Learning Projects also vary depending on the project and organization you choose.
In many cases, you will have an opportunity to try a variety of foods from other cultures and engage in an authentic experience overseas, and therefore food options will most often generally reflect the local cuisine. For example, some foods that are part of your regular diet at home may not be available, and you may have to include new foods in order to maintain a balanced diet.
In most cases, vegetarians are easily provided for; however, it may be possible that your volunteer organization will not be able to cater to very specific diets. Please be sure to check with your volunteer organization before making final arrangements.
In many cases three meals per day are provided, but again, you will want to check with your volunteer organization as well as the details of the specific project you desire- each organization and project is a little different. Sometimes host organizations may provide the food to volunteers (such as via host families), while others might require you to contribute to the meal planning and preparation. |

Research Your Options
Make sure you research all of your options and choose a volunteer experience that will work best for you! The information here is representative of what you are likely to find on a Service Learning Project abroad, but it is not necessarily specific to the project or organization that you will choose.
Please note that UCI does not endorse or pre-screen any specific organization or Service Learning Project, and you will not enroll in a Service Learning Project through UCI. It is your responsibility to find and enroll in your own Service Learning Project.
