This is a required course in the Certificate Program in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts. Gain a practical understanding of Fair Market Value and how it applies to appraisal reports prepared for the IRS, dissolution, loss claims and other assignments. Examine contracts as they relate to an appraisal practice. Review insurance, tax law, and court vocabulary through the study of precedent establishing cases. Develop an understanding of ethical and professional standards, the relationship of standards to practice, competency, liability and the business management of an appraisal practice. Prerequisite: Art History X400, Introduction to Personal Property Valuation; Art History X400.1, Personal Property Valuation: Methodology, Research and Analysis; and Art History X400.2, Personal Property Valuation: Report Writing. This course is the last in a series of four foundation courses designed for candidates to the appraisal profession and must be taken in sequence. All textbooks can be purchased from the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) and must be purchased prior to the class. Nancy A. Martin, B.A, A.S.A., is a senior member of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) credentialed in the areas of antiques, decorative arts and residential contents. She was president of the Los Angeles chapter of ASA, and co-founded the LA chapter of the International Society of Appraisers. She has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Decorative Arts Council at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and was a docent at the Huntington Library and Art Collections. Her private appraisal practice in Arcadia, CA specializes in insurance, charitable contribution, loss claims and estate work.
