Fundamentals of Electronic Discovery and Trial (Section 1)

An elective course in the Paralegal Certificate Program. Eligible participants will earn up to 30 hours of general MCLE credit based on attendance.
This is a hands-on course that will include an overview of the changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and state laws relating to electronic discovery. The course will also provide tools to implement a records management program, assess systems, draft litigation hold memos, draft custodian intake forms, the components of electronic discovery which includes collection, processing, review and production, electronically stored information ("ESI"), paralegal skills, case management, paralegal processes, and preparing for trial. The course will cover the roles of both an in-house paralegal and a law firm paralegal. Completion of Fundamentals of Legal Assistantship, Legal Research, Legal Writing, and Civil Litigation I is recommended prior to enrolling in this course. Students should be personal computer and Microsoft software proficient.

Christine J. Garber, B.A., is a senior paralegal at Allergan, Inc., Irvine. She is a graduate of the UCI Extension Legal Assistantship Certificate Program.

Todd T. King, M.B.A., received his Master's degree from Pepperdine University. He has 18 years of experience as a management and services consultant to AMLAW 250 law firms, Fortune 1000 Legal departments, Intellectual Property firms and organizations. He specializes in end to end electronic discover litigation life cycles. King has also designed and delivered California State Bar approved continuing legal education classes which focus on electronic discovery and intellectual property.

Gabrielle J. Roudabush, B.A., CP, has over ten years of paralegal experience and six trials in just the past two years. Gabrielle has also spent considerable time dealing with the collection, production, use, and presentation of electronically stored information.
