Software Applications for the Legal Environment (Section 1)

An elective course in the Paralegal Certificate Program.
Today's law offices utilize computers in almost every aspect of the legal environment including preparation of legal documents, spreadsheets, court forms, timesheets, legal research, and investigation. This course will give you the edge on MS Word, Windows, Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs that can make performing these tasks more efficient and effective. Improve or gain skills in litigation support, docketing, and calendar management programs and learn to identify the ethical considerations for using email and Internet research. Get access to 50 useful Internet sites for legal information, and handy "tricks and tips" guides. Two blank 3-1/2 inch double-sided high- density diskettes for hands-on exercises required. This course requires significant time outside the classroom to complete assignments. This course is designed for the beginning user. Advance registration required. Refund deadline is one week prior to first course meeting. Students will need access to Microsoft Office 2007 in order to complete homework assignments.

Kathleen Houts Miller, M.A., ACP, CAS, Senior Paralegal for FedEx Express Legal Department in Irvine. Miller serves as Program Advisor and Advisory Board member for the UC Irvine Extension Paralegal Certificate Program. Miller is a past president of the Commission for Advanced California Paralegal Specialization (CACPS) and the Orange County Paralegal Association (OCPA). She continues her involvement with OCPA, currently serving as a board member, ethics sections co-chair and MCLE Chair. She has previously served on the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) board of directors.

Jon S. Montgomery, B.A., CLA, senior paralegal and real estate specialist, Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP. Montgomery is a past President of the California Alliance of Paralegal Associations (CAPA) and of the Orange County Paralegal Association (OCPA). He is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Five Star Paralegal of the Year Award and the National Achievement Award of the National Association of Legal Assistants.
