Introduction to the Spa Industry, Services and Treatments (Section 1)

A required course in the Spa and Hospitality Management Certificate Program.
This course provides an overview of the evolution of the spa industry from ancient civilizations to new frontiers of convergence integrating spas, medicine, healthcare, tourism, and hospitality. From an international perspective, an overview of the industry will be provided with emphasis on current business models and positioning for future trends. Definition and market segmentation of spa categories including day, resort, medical, destination, hospital, and lifestyle management programs will be discussed with examples in each category. Following an overview of foundations of the American spa industry, a review will be provided on the fundamentals of spa therapies, equipment, and products. The course will conclude with projections and analysis of future industry trends and employment opportunities. See enrollment confirmation for login information.

Janice Gronvold, M.S., is the founder of Spectrec, provider of business and marketing development services for the spa, health and resort industries. She has held executive positions with world-renowned projects in the United States and abroad and is actively involved in developing internationally based educational programs for the industry.
