Child Growth and Development (Section 1)

An introduction to child growth and development, this course focuses on development from the prenatal stage through late childhood, with an emphasis on early childhood development. It presents an overview of current theories relative to the developmental issues inherent in physical, perceptual, emotional, and cognitive growth, and examines language, and age-appropriate social behaviors and skills. Students will learn through discussion, the use of case studies, real-life observations, and the analysis of theoretical information. This course meets one of the State of California, Community Care Licensing Requirements to be able to teach in early childhood group care. See enrollment confirmation for login information.

Catherine L. Smythe, MA, is Director of Montessori Western Teacher Training Program, a private postsecondary institution, where she has for the past fifteen years, taught educational philosophy, human development and classroom leadership to students preparing for Montessori teacher certification. Concurrently, Ms. Smythe serves as Executive Director of Montessori Greenhouse School, a private early childhood and elementary school, in existence since 1970.
