Certificate Requirements

In order to earn the Hospitality Management Certificate, students must complete all the courses listed below with a grade of “C” or higher in each course.

All certificate programs at UC Irvine Extension require professional-level English language proficiency in listening and note-taking, reading comprehension and vocabulary, written expression, and oral presentation. International students who do not meet certificate program admissions requirements are invited to enroll first in one of our English language program offerings.

Gain an overview of the American higher educational system and acquire the academic skills to ensure your success in an ACP.

Professional Communications Seminar (PCS)

Understand American business culture, sharpen your communication and presentation skills, learn professional etiquette, and improve your business English.

Courses

• Introduction to the Hospitality Industry
  Address the interrelationships of key hospitality industry segments from an international perspective, and examine consumer and travel market trends, globalization, environmental conservation, and the impact of economic and political forces in the travel and hospitality industries. These topics follow an introductory review of each hospitality.
• Strategic Marketing and Branding for the Hospitality Industry
  Strategic marketing and branding are essential components to business planning and positioning. In an increasingly competitive worldwide industry, cutting–edge decision-making skills are necessary to effectively reach specific markets and reinforce brand identity. Through various study modules, examine effective marketing and branding practices utilized in the hospitality industry; including ways to manage double branding opportunities, electronic sales, distribution channels, and brand dominance. Review strategic marketing plan elements through case studies and review of various international hospitality marketing initiatives.
• Customer Service Management
  Learn how to integrate customer relationship management for providing effective customer service and support. Address the importance of how you handle your customers and how that can directly affect your individual goals, as well as your team's and company's performance. Topics include: delivering better, faster service and increase customer satisfaction, learning how to achieve repeat business, and motivating your employees to provide seamless service.
• Fundamentals of Accounting and Budgeting
  Understand how to develop a realistic and comprehensive accounting and budgeting system that serves as a tool for department managers and general management in the hospitality industry. Develop an accounting and budget system focusing on profit and loss statements, balance sheet analysis, and flexible budgeting and variance analysis. Learn to analyze traditional operational matrices and benchmarks for the hospitality industry.
• Project and Event Management
  Successful event management requires excellent communication skills and coordination of many individuals and departments, and frequently, outside vendors. Making certain that projects achieve their objectives, meet their deadlines, and are within budget can be a daunting but rewarding challenge. Discover proven tools, concepts and ways of thinking about projects that will considerably enhance the positive outcome of a hospitality and/or special event project.
• Human Resources and Leadership for the Hospitality Professional
  Examine the difference between a Manager and a Leader and learn what effective leadership means. The importance and benefits of appropriate human resource management techniques in the hospitality and travel-related businesses such as employee selection, progressive counseling/progressive discipline, termination, employee motivation and employee training are explained.
• Fundamentals of the Tourism Industry
  Examine the history and the theories behind the development of the modern tourism industry. Explore the socio-cultural, environmentally sustainable practices, and primary, secondary, and tertiary economic impacts on a region. Analyze the infrastructure and components of the natural and built environments, and how the role of government and tourism organizations impact the industry. Engage in active discussions on the current trends and the future growth of this industry, including showcasing tourism areas worldwide.

Internships
As an optional last course and for an additional fee of $1,650, you have the opportunity to apply academic theory and gain practical experience in a variety of businesses and industries for up to three months. A research project provides additional training. Also included in the internship are the Resume Development and Interviewing Skills workshops.
