International Graduate Studies Preparation Program

UCI CampusEntry Requirements

UCI Extension will determine the final eligibility of the applicants. Applicants to the IGSPP must meet the following admissions criteria:

  • Applicants must provide evidence of completion of an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards similar to those of the University of California.
  • Applicants must provide detailed university transcripts in English with the school seal: Minimum level of performance is 80% (3.0 and above). Scanned copies are acceptable for application; originals must be submitted when the applicant arrives at UC Irvine Extension. (Note: This is the minimum GPA requirement for admission to a graduate program at UCI. Some departments may require a higher GPA for admission.)
  • Applicants with TOEFL scores starting at 500 may be admitted to IGSPP. Students with a score of 530 PBT/71 iBT or above will enroll in an ACP of their choice, while students with a score below 530 (or with no submitted score) will take at least one quarter of 10-Week Intensive ESL before advancing to an ACP*. Since some ACPs are not offered every quarter, applicants who do not meet the minimum English proficiency requirements should submit their applications for the quarter preceding the ACP’s start date.
  • Applicants must provide proof of having sufficient funds to participate in IGSPP, approximately US$40,000/12 months.
  • Applicants must be eligible to apply for an F-1 visa.

*Students who are required to take ESL in their first quarter of the program must take UCI Extension's ESL Placement Test. If the results from the ESL Placement Test clearly show that a student's actual level of English language proficiency is significantly lower upon arrival, students will be formally advised to be enrolled in more than the designated number of quarters of ESL as the best alternative.
