International Undergraduate Preparation Program
Academic Program
Students enrolling in this program will be provided the U.S. equivalent of one academic year (nine months, three quarters) of full time study. (An additional quarter may be arranged at the option of the student for an additional fee.) Both before and after their arrival at UCI, students will be advised by an academic advisor assigned to them who will carefully collaborate with the student to chart out a course of study. * Demonstration of English Mastery
All IUPP students take an English placement test when they arrive at UCI. After the first quarter, students will be eligible to enroll in UC Irvine undergraduate courses, independent of TOEFL score, upon successful demonstration, to the IUPP advisor, of English language proficiency required for maximum success in such environments.
** Summer Session
During Summer Quarter (end of June to mid-September), all UCI undergraduate courses are offered only through UCI Summer Session, which operates in two five-week sessions. Students usually enroll in up to two four-unit courses in each five-week session for a possible total of up to 12 units. Summer Session courses are very intensive; in five weeks, students are expected to cover the same material usually covered in a ten-week quarter. Any student, including international students with a minimum TOEFL score of 550 or equivalent, can pre-register for Summer Session courses starting the preceding March 1st. If a course has a prerequisite, the student works with the IUPP advisor to ensure that the prerequisite is met in advance.
UCI undergraduate classes are provided on a space-available basis; students enrolled in these courses receive all of the rights and privileges of UC non-matriculated students. Enrollment in undergraduate courses for credit is not guaranteed. Visit the current UCI quarter course listing or the online version of the UCI general catalog for more information.
A full-time course of study, in compliance with both UC and U.S. immigration requirements, is defined as:
- Minimum of 18 hours of ESL courses or 12 units of undergraduate courses per quarter
- The maximum number of units allowable in this program is 12 undergraduate units per quarter.
- No more than 3 units or one course per quarter may be taken in an online format
Students must maintain a 3.0 (B average) and earn no less than B- in any class for all ESL and UCI undergraduate coursework undertaken while in IUPP. Students may be dismissed if they fail to meet UC academic and/or behavioral standards: UC Academic Standards / UC Behavioral Standards.
UCI Extension will monitor each student’s academic and personal progress. After each student signs the FERPA Authorization to Release Information to a Designated Third Party, UCI Extension may report student’s performance to designated recipients, including UCI Undergraduate Admissions, the admissions units of other US university campuses, and the student’s parents/guardians.
