International Undergraduate Preparation Program
Academic Program
Students enrolling in this program will be provided the U.S. equivalent of one academic year (nine months, three quarters) of full time study. (An additional quarter may be arranged at the option of the student for an additional cost.) Both before and after their arrival at UCI, students will be advised by an academic advisor assigned to them who will carefully collaborate with the student to chart out a course of study. A student entering in the fall may expect the following schedule:

* Demonstration of English Mastery
All IUPP students take an English placement test when they arrive at UCI. After the first quarter, students will be eligible to enroll in UC Irvine undergraduate courses, upon successful demonstration (e.g. obtaining a TOEFL score of 550 PBT/80 iBT), of English language proficiency required for maximum success in such environments.
Students who enter IUPP with two quarters of 10-Week Intensive ESL may advance to a full load of UCI classes in the second quarter by demonstrating sufficient English language proficiency meeting all of the following criteria.
- Obtain a TOEFL score of 550 PBT/80 iBT;
- Maintain a "B" average with the completion of ESL level 6 in the 10-week ESL Program;
- Demonstrate acceptable behavior and academic performance.
Students who do not meet the requirements for enrollment in UCI courses may have to take additional quarters of ESL at an additonal cost.
** Summer Session
During Summer Quarter (end of June to mid-September), all UCI undergraduate courses are offered only through UCI Summer Session, which operates in two five-week sessions. Students usually enroll in up to two four-unit courses in each five-week session for a possible total of up to 12 units. Summer Session courses are very intensive; in five weeks, students are expected to cover the same material usually covered in a ten-week quarter. Any student, including international students with a minimum TOEFL score of 550 PBT/80 iBT or equivalent, can pre-register for Summer Session courses starting the preceding March 1st. If a course has a prerequisite, the student works with the IUPP advisor to ensure that the prerequisite is met in advance.
UCI undergraduate classes are provided on a space-available basis; students enrolled in these courses receive all of the rights and privileges of UC non-matriculated students. Enrollment in undergraduate courses for credit is not guaranteed. Visit the current UCI quarter course listing or the online version of the UCI general catalog for more information.
IUPP Bio Sci Track
Beginning Summer 2011, University Programs, in association with UC Irvine's School of Biological Sciences, will offer a new specialized study track for IUPP. This track is designed to streamline the application to an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences, possibly preparing students for entry into one of many health professions.
In addition to the program benefits in IUPP, the Bio Sci track will include the following:
- An individually designed course of study with up to 36 units of undergraduate coursework in Biology, Chemistry, and Math, transferable to the degree once the student is admitted to UCI.
- One-on-one academic advising from a qualified, dedicated academic counselor in The School of Biological Sciences.
- Facilitated study groups.
- Connection to faculty in the School of Biological Sciences.
A full-time course of study in IUPP, in compliance with both UC and U.S. immigration requirements, is defined as:
- Minimum of 18 hours of ESL courses or 12 units of undergraduate courses per quarter
- The maximum number of units allowable in this program is 12 undergraduate units per quarter.
- No more than 3 units or one course per quarter may be taken in an online format
Students must maintain a 3.0 (B average) and earn no less than B- in any class for all ESL and UCI undergraduate coursework undertaken while in IUPP. Students may be dismissed if they fail to meet UC academic and/or behavioral standards: UC Academic Standards / UC Behavioral Standards.
UCI Extension will monitor each student’s academic and personal progress. After each student signs the FERPA Authorization to Release Information to a Designated Third Party, UCI Extension may report student’s performance to designated recipients, including UCI Undergraduate Admissions, the admissions units of other US university campuses, and the student’s parents/guardians.
