INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL PERSIAN MUSIC (AH 101)

AH 101 INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL PERSIAN MUSIC

Through audio-visual and lecture materials, this will be an opportunity for OLLI members to become familiar with the instruments, rhythms, and modal system that characterize the classical Persian musical repertoire. Members will hear the varied and distinguishing sounds that give this music such a unique contrast to western classical music. Discussion will cover musical instruction methodology, solo versus ensemble performances, the relationship of music to poetry, and various performance aesthetics.

Course Presenter: Hossein Omoumi, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized master of the ney (reed flute) and the Maseeh Professor in Persian Performing Arts, UCI Department of Music. He has performed and lectured internationally, recorded extensively, and designed significant innovations to several classical instruments.
