JAZZ! JAZZ! JAZZ! (AH 103)

This course is filled to capicity, please try enrolling again next quarter.

AH 103 JAZZ! JAZZ! JAZZ!
Week 1 - What Is Jazz?
This class will give deeper appreciation of how jazz-combos exchange "hidden messages" to signal changes in key or tempo and what jazz improvisation means. We will gain insight into some of the combo instruments and, for added enjoyment, will listen to some time-tested favorites.

Jazz Combo Presenters:
David Schetter, Dr. James McGaugh, Rich Cozzi and Friends
David Schetter - Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research (Emeritus) and established UCI's Office of Technology Alliances. Dave's enjoyable 50-year musical career has given him opportunity to play blues, jazz, pop and classical forms on clarinet, soprano and tenor sax. He holds a B.A. in Economics from UCSB and an M.S. in Administration from UCI Graduate School of Management.
Dr. James L. McGaugh is the founding Director of the Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory and Research Professor of Psychobiology and Pharmacology at UCI. His Ph.D. is from the University of California, Berkeley, with postdoctoral research in neuropharmacology in Rome, Italy. The founding chair of the UCI Department of Psychobiology, he has also served as Dean of the School of Biological Sciences and as Executive Vice Chancellor.
Rich Cozzi has more than thirty years' playing and teaching experience with specialization in guitars. He is currently a faculty member in the music department at the Tarbut V'Torah School and at Concordia University.
Week 2 - Jazz Chords
Have you ever looked at printed music and wondered what the symbols C7 meant - or the difference between that symbol and C major 7 or C minor 7? This class explains how chords are made up and sound and explains chord progressions, so if you see one, you can fairly predict the next chord. And how do a few players say, "let's play blues in F" and everyone knows what to play? Our presenters will demonstrate by playing and singing several jazz classics.

Presenters: Marvin Marsh began playing popular piano at age twelve, was playing with local bands at 17, and joined a four piece combo after military service. He enrolled as a music major at USC, then switched to business when he discovered he just wanted to play the piano for fun. After various careers, he started his own company manufacturing sound and vibration measuring instruments. Retired almost 20 years, this OLLI member now plays for fun.

Carl Hurty is a singer and actor who believes one of life's joys is connecting with an audience. He has played leading rolls in local theater productions and been a barbershop lead singer in performances at Disneyland and Long Beach Terrace Theater. A graduate of CSULA in engineering, Carl is enjoying a career in international projects, serving as General Manager of the Southern California Bechtel Office.
