THE OPERAS OT MOZART (AH 104)

This course is filled to capicity, please try enrolling again next quarter.

AH 104 THE OPERAS OF MOZART
Boys of eleven usually play ball with their friends, text with them, perhaps go fishing with their fathers, or go to the movies. But at the age of 11 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart writes an opera along with other compositions for orchestral instruments and also gives piano concerts with his father all across Europe. At 12, he writes another opera. And at 13, another and another and so on until he dies at the age of 35. That is what we'll explore in these sessions: how Mozart used any and all means of musical language available at the time to provide exactly the right emotional effect needed to support the plots he chose. And he did it all with the greatest of ease. His instincts were absolutely perfect and his operatic output was phenomenal. Truly, he was an incredible genius! It is recommended that if you sign up for this course, you should also sign up for "The Classical Period in Music, History, Philosophy and Art," AH 105.

Presenter: George Rothman will once again treat OLLI members to an interesting and informative lecture series on Mozart's operas. A retired dentist, he can date his interest in opera back to his high school years when he began his collection of records, CDs, and videos. This background, combined with his keen interest, led to an extensive knowledge of a variety of operas. Adding to this, he has performed as an extra in local operas. His humorous speaking style, so popular to listeners, gives us reason to become enthusiastic opera buffs!
