CLASSICAL PERIOD (AH 105)

This course is filled to capicity, please try enrolling again next quarter.

AH 105 CLASSICAL PERIOD
Music, History, Philosophy and Art

Week 1 - Music and History

We shall explore the music and lives of Mozart and Haydn, and view and discuss the leaders in history during this period, which shaped events such as the American and French Revolutions. We shall also explore the literature and science of this period. If you register for this course, it is advised that you also register for "Mozart's Operas" for a complete Mozart panorama.
Presenter: Meredith Cheston is a music aficionado and an enthusiastic
developer of music and humanities classes for OLLI members. She is a University of California, Berkeley, graduate and UCI Retiree, born and raised in an atmosphere of music, literature and art. This rich environment created an immense appreciation and love for the arts, which she enjoys sharing.

Week 2 - Philosophy in the Classical Age: Enlightenment and Romance
18th Century Europe witnessed the culmination of a development of reason called "The Enlightenment." This was followed closely by a Romantic reaction. We will have a quick review of both developments.
Presenter: Jeff Mason, a popular OLLI presenter, currently teaches part time at California State University, Fullerton. He loves philosophy, especially the history of the subject, which he sees alive and well today in ways that may not be recognized. He plays intensely mediocre golf and the African Djembe drum, and enjoys a wide range of outdoor sports whenever possible.

Week 3 - Art of the 18th Century
We shall explore two art movements of the 18th Century: Rococo and Neo-classicism, investigating the developing attitude of Romanticism and its affect on the art of that period. Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, Canaletto, Canova, Hogarth, Vigee-Lebrun, David, Houdon, Benjamin West and Thomas Jefferson are among the artists to be discussed.
Presenter: Jacquelyn Powell has taught art history and appreciation at Golden West College and California State University, Fullerton. She has led Study Abroad Programs in Italy and Spain, and served as an art education consultant to several school districts and museums.

NOTE: Change of Location and Time for Week 4
Week 4 - Piano Concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart We will examine the piano concerto as a genre and its evolution in the hands of Mozart. Nina Scolnik will explain several concertos in detail, performing excerpts and revealing Mozart at every stage of his creative development.
Presenter: Nina Scolnik, piano professor and Associate Chair for Performance at UCI, has concertized in the United States and abroad as a recitalist, soloist with orchestras, chamber musician and collaborative pianist. She is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and Juilliard.
