AH 108 FATHERS - DAUGHTERS
This series illuminates the ageless dilemma between fathers and daughters.
Shakespeare: King Lear - "How sharper than a serpent's tooth is it to have a thankless child! Patriarchal power" further viewed on a clip of the first act of Ian Mckellan in King Lear (2008). The Tempest - Prospero's daughter Miranda loses her trust in him. Not sure if he caused the "tempest," Miranda sees Prospero's power and control dominate her kindness and innocence.

To Kill a Mockingbird - Father Atticus explains morality to Daughter "Scout" in a racially tense town as he defies majority rule for personal conscience.
Friday, October 9, 1- 3 PM
Sylvia Plath & Anne Sexton - Two mid-twentieth century east coast poets, who shared lifelong battles with mental illness that ended in suicide and who both experienced a negative relationship to a domineering, unapproachable and controlling father, men who would forever characterize the poetry of their daughters.

Pride & Prejudice, Persuasion, Emma - Analysis of the father/daughter domestic and social relationships in the Jane Austen novels.
Friday, October 23, 1- 3 PM
Final Session: Friday, October 30th, 1-3 PM: Topic and presenter will be provided at the first class meeting on October 2nd.
Presenters:
Lori Anne Ferrell is a Professor of Early Modern History and Literature, School of Arts and Humanities, Claremont Graduate University. The evaluations culled from an OLLI winter course demanded her return.
Karin Mayer is a veteran of the educational system, teaching on many levels for almost 40 years. As a fan of gothic, she has brought to OLLI the gothic styles from the Bronte's romantic novels to Frankenstein, Dracula and monster mayhem.
Nancy Brooks Rayl is an OLLI peer and former educator in the community college system and specializes in literature and creative writing. She edits manuscripts, produces books, moderates ongoing writing workshops and reads, reads, reads.
Karen Jackman is a committed Janeite. Not knowing Austen's sustaining reading power, she read and re-read her while a teenager hoping to still love her as an adult. She does and will share her enthusiasm.
