ADVANCED RESEARCH AT CALIT2 (SC 204)
SC 204 ADVANCED RESEARCH AT CALIT2
This course will describe integrated, multidisciplinary UCI research at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology [Calit2]. Emphasis will be placed on technologies for energy independence.
Week One: Solar Power & Biofuels
Calit2 researchers are developing low-cost solar cells from nanomaterials to capture sunlight and turn it into electrical energy. Another team is re-engineering biofuel production to reduce manufacturing costs with computational biology techniques.
Week Two: Fuel Cells & Smart Grids
Researchers are developing ways to maximize output of fuel cells that produce electricity with zero emissions. They also investigate ways to integrate them into distributed-generation systems, hybrid turbine technologies and electrical grids.
Week Three: Cleaner Coal & Nuclear
Coal continues to supply a majority of our energy needs. UCI researchers are improving coal-combustion tools to reduce pollutants with technologies that can be easily implemented in existing power plants. Another team is researching ways to reduce and recycle nuclear waste.
