EXPLORING SOUTH AFRICA (SS 301)
SS 301 EXPLORING SOUTH AFRICA
Recent elections have again focused attention on South Africa, a country wealthy in natural resources but one plagued by inequality, AIDs, and struggle in the 20th century. This class will focus on the rich diversity of the country.
Session 1: South Africa in the News
The focus will be on history and culture plus post-Apartheid struggles, relationships with neighbors (Zimbabwe) and the AIDs fight.
Session 2: South Africa through Art
Contemporary and historic art and music will demonstrate South Africa's response to aspects of life there. Slides, audio, and objects will support the discussion.
Session 3: South Africa through Film
The award-winning film, Tsotsi, will be used to illustrate contemporary life in Johannesburg. Students are encouraged to watch the film before the session.
Session 4: South Africa through Literature
Short stories, poetry, and novels will show the range of literature. Authors to be discussed will include Nadine Gordimer, Andre Brink, and J.M. Coetzee.
