THE HOLOCAUST: Surviving, Remembering, Returning (SS 309)

This course is filled to capicity, please try enrolling again next quarter.

SS 309 THE HOLOCAUST:
Surviving, Remembering, Returning

When Nazi storm troopers unleashed a wave of atrocities against the Jewish population all over Germany on Kristallnacht, November 9, 1938, the lives of Jews - and brave non-Jews -- throughout Europe were changed. Survivors and witnesses will share their remembrances and experiences.

Session 1 :
Jack Hecht will relate his escape from Hamburg with his parents, riding the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Shanghai, where he lived in the ghetto during and post WWII years.

Marianne Trompetter Dazzo will discuss her life before, during and after the holocaust. In May of 1940, there were 140,000 Jews living in the Netherlands; 104,000 never returned. One hundred five of her relatives perished. "My mother was very brave," she relates, "she gave her two and seven-year-old children away to strangers in the hope of saving their lives." Marianne was hidden by eight different families who risked their lives and those of their children to save a seven-year-old child.

Session 2:

Bertie Lubinsky will discuss her experiences in hiding from age eight to thirteen when the Germans occupied Holland, including three years with a Dutch Reformed Minister and his wife and five children.

Hetty Nihom, a native of Holland, will share her experiences hiding in the dungeon of a castle and in a chicken coop in the forest, and her survival in a concentration camp.

Fred Stern will focus on "Remembrance, Responsibility, Future," the foundation formed by the German government to bring together holocaust survivors and German students. As the only known survivor of the holocaust era in his home town, Grevenbroich, Germany, Fred was invited by the foundation to return and speak to students, the local History Club, and the Lion's Club, as well as to the mayor and the City Council. The focus was on his life as the only Jewish student at his school and the experiences of exclusion, persecution and fear.
