THE WORK OF A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER (SS 310)
SS 310 THE WORK OF A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER
The 2008 presidential debates brought the term community organizer to public attention. The work of a community organizer is part of a long political tradition that builds "from the bottom up" through civic engagement of primarily marginalized segments of society or in social movements.
Through lecture, film clips, and discussion of the work of Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Bob Moses, Yuri Kochiyama, Johnnie Tillmon, Dolores Huerta, and others, our presenter will clarify the role of the community organizer and how it expands rather than limits democracy.
Presenter: Tiffany Willoughby-Herard, Ph.D, is an Assistant Professor of African-American Studies and an affiliate of the Women's Studies program. She has a special interest in political philosophy and civic engagement.
