SS 311 POWER AND FOLLY:
A Continuation of the Saga of the Caesars
The saga continues with the story of Nero as emperor. Claudius, poisoned by his wife Agrippina, dies in 54 A.D. and is succeeded by his 17-year-old stepson, Nero. The young emperor rules well for a few years, but slowly he spirals out of control and devotes his life, energy and the empire's resources to the pursuit of artistic endeavors and extravagant building programs. By 68 A.D., Nero's conduct is so bizarre that even Roman tolerance cannot protect him. The Senate steps in with a sentence of death.
Presenter: Judge Luis Cardenas. A favorite presenter of OLLI members for many years, he shares his extensive knowledge of Ancient Rome in a personalized, exciting forum, enhanced by slide presentations. Judge Cardenas has taught at OLLI Cal State Fullerton for more than 25 years, joining our program several years ago.
