SS 314 WORLD RELIGIONS: BUDDHISM
Discussion Group

This group uses the Great Books Shared Inquiry Method. Two books and a workbook will be used. The books to be used are (1) Huston Smith, The World Religions, and (2) Philip Novak, The World's Wisdom. The discussion will be directed toward exploring the relevance of the ideas in these books for our lives as individuals and as members of modern society. The first four sessions will be devoted to the relevant chapters in the Huston Smith book. The last three sessions will be devoted to reading and discussion of the sacred writings in Buddhism. This class will be preceded by one on Hinduism.

NOTE: The textbooks are available at all bookstores and on Amazon.com for about $17 each and the workbook, Exploring the World's Religions by Irving Alan Sparks is available on Amazon.Com for about $8. Be sure to order this workbook early since it takes the longest to arrive.

Course Developer/Study Leader: Doug Brown.
Doug Brown grew up in Laguna Beach. He earned his BA in History at Carleton College and did all the work except the dissertation for a Ph.D. in economics at NYU. He recently retired from the travel business. Throughout his life Doug has enjoyed reading and discussing history, literature, and politics.
