EVALUATING POP PSYCHOLOGY (SS 316)
SS 316 EVALUATING POP PSYCHOLOGY
The main exposure that most people have to psychology is through pop psychology or self-help books, or through popular television programs. Academic or scientific psychologists, on the other hand, use a different set of criteria for evaluating psychological arguments and typically find fault with the more commonsense approaches.
In this course a rigorous framework for evaluating popular psychology concepts will be developed and this framework will be applied to a sample of best-selling psychology books. Class members will be requested to read three popular psychology books, one per week.
NOTE: Course enrollment will be limited to 25. Those enrolled in this class will be sent the list of books to be used in discussion and where the books would be available.
Presenter: Stanley Wolf, Ph.D., professor emeritus at California State University, Fullerton. He has taught and published in the areas of personality and everyday cognition (and has published a book on the latter topic). He has done research on dating services, and has taught an academic course entitled, "Evaluating Pop Psychology Concepts."
