THE BIOGRAPHY OF AMERICA (SS 319)
SS 319 The Biography of America
The literature of American life has been influenced by powerful social, political, and cultural forces and by history making events. In this course we trace America's passages from colonial settlements to world superpower as seen in successive literary movements such as utopianism, nationalism, social realism, naturalism, and multiculturalism. In the words of one author, "History is only what has been recorded, which means that much of life remains invisible. Writers make the invisible visible, and their stories define who we are as individuals and as a people."
Presenter: Jerry Binder, PhD, has been teaching courses for OLLI members for 11 years. This popular speaker is a lifespan educator with a doctorate in psychology, a Masters degree in the Psychology of Education, and an undergraduate degree in American Cultural Studies. He is currently studying the impact on American society of the emerging age-wave of millions of emeriti adults, and regularly teaches "A Roadmap for the New Adulthood" through UCI Extension about this subject.
