SS 305 OVAL OFFICE UPS AND DOWNS:
Putting Obama's First Year in Context
President Clinton once said that presidents "campaign in poetry and govern in prose." In contrast to the lofty ideals that propel presidential campaigns, governing from the White House is rarely so pure; pragmatism and missteps often complicate matters. This course explores typical challenges presidents confront during their first year in office. It will compare President Obama's inaugural year to that of his predecessors. It will conclude by looking ahead to his next three in office.
Presenter: Matthew N. Beckmann, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science at UCI. Professor Beckmann is actively researching the strategic interplay between Washington's key players as they decide federal policy. Later this year his next book, Art of the Possible: Presidential Leadership in U.S. Lawmaking, 1953-2004, will be published. He has given a previous course for OLLI.
