SE 2 Exploring the Art of Music in Film
In anticipation of the Laguna Beach Music Festival beginning January 18, Paul Chihara returns to OLLI to present an overview of the festivities celebrating music in film. The discussion will cover the many functions of a film score, the creative process, and the interactions among director, composer and musical artist. These will be illustrated with musical and film examples along with in-depth commentary based on Doctor Chihara's vast experience as a performer, and composer of film scores, ballet, and concert orchestral works.
Presenter: Paul Seiko Chihara, born in 1938, received a doctorate in fine arts from Cornell University and studied with such luminaries as Robert Palmer in the U.S. and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He has been composer-in-residence at the Marlboro Music Festival and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. His concert works have been performed in most major cities in the U.S. and Europe and have been widely recorded. He has composed scores for more than 90 motion pictures and television series, and is currently Professor of Music at UCLA.
