SE 10 BEALL CENTER: "EMERGENCE"
ROBERTO JACOBY AT THE UCI ART GALLERY
Beall Center Installation
Emergence is the arising of novel and coherent structures, patterns and properties during the process of self-organization in complex systems.
As humans we are created and create through a process of emergence. "Emergence," curated by David Familian and Simon Penny, features international artists exploring the biological and computational manifestations of behavior from dynamically changing and interactive sculptures. Whether these emergent forms originate organically or are man-made, they can illustrate the rich variety of mutating systems with all the variety and ability to adapt to a changing world.
UCI Gallery - Major Work of Art Series
Roberto Jacoby is a 1960s Argentine artist whose artwork defined a branch of "new media" Conceptual Art. During his twenty-year hiatus from the art world, in the 1980s, Jacoby wrote lyrics for the famous Argentine new wave band "Virus." In this exhibit, his 1968 work, el culo te abrocho literally superimposes lyrics from that band onto vintage reprints of 60s political posters. Combined, the posters and lyrics provide a commentary on the utopian, poetic hopes that characterized the '60s global Cultural Revolution.
