Welcome to OLLI at UC Irvine (Fall 2009)

Fall is almost here and, even at our age, it’s time to begin a new school year—with new faces, old friends, interesting courses and a comfortable routine that leads to learning. Thanks to the hard work of a dedicated group of OLLI member-volunteers, once again this catalog describes about 70 courses and events that will whet your mental appetite. Peggy Maradudin, Vice President, Programs, guided the process of designing courses with the course developers, curriculum chairs and committees, copy editors and facilitators, who collaborate so well to make the pieces fit.

Leah Jordan, Vice President, Administration, works with our wonderful OLLI office staff, Karen McKenzie and Barbara Barone, to transform the volunteer produced copy into the professional document you are holding. Aime Miller, UCI Extension, oversees the final touches of layout and production. Many hands, heads, and hearts are involved in creating the outstanding curriculum provided for members of OLLI at UC Irvine.

Please read every page carefully and follow directions to complete registration as a member, either for one semester or for the full year. The intention is that every member will receive a minimum of four courses and four Special/Single Events listed on the registration form submitted. Every term we have a few courses that everyone wants to take, which leads to a crowd and wait lists or even moving to a larger venue. Your patience will be appreciated as it takes a bit of time to make necessary adjustments.

There are a few added attractions listed in this catalog. Our OLLI has a new group under our wing—a satellite of Associate OLLI Members at the SusiQ Senior Center in Laguna Beach. Their registration form is included in the catalog, describing the abbreviated program we have scheduled at that site. It is funded with small membership dues and per class fees. Associate Members may participate in the courses at SusiQ only. Regular OLLI members may attend the SusiQ courses if space is available, at no charge.

The Fall 2009 Forum schedule at the University Club is listed at the back of the catalog. OLLI is the official Moderator of the University Club Forum and our members are entitled to a free membership in the University Club. Your participation with the Forum is encouraged.
