Amelia Earhart Awards Luncheon May 1, 2001

From the Mission Viejo News and Coto De Caza News — April 13, 2001

The UC Irvine Extension Women's Opportunities Center will host the 2001 Amelia Earhart Awards Luncheon on May 1st from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Sutton Place Hotel, Newport Beach. Sophie Hall Cripe, M.A., is the event chair.

The highlight of the ceremony is the Award for Individual Leadership presentation. The award is given annually to the person who exemplifies leadership, service and a commitment to women's issues. Attendees also will be enlightened by the unveiling of the center's ambitious Women in Technology initiative. The goal of the program is to catapult women in technology careers through comprehensive guidance and training.

"The achievements of women need to be brought to the public's attention," said Victoria Curtin, director of the Women's Opportunities Center. "The awards luncheon is our way of saying 'thank you' to those who recognize women for their contributions to our community."

Now in its 11th year, the awards luncheon attracts many of Orange County's influential business and social leaders. Corporate sponsors include Fluor Corporation, Nordstrom, Rohl Corporation, Goodwill Industries, Northern Trust Bank and many others. Proceeds from the event fund the center's job seekers clinic, career self assessment and other services for individuals searching for employment, reentering the work force, changing careers or refining work skills.
