Leadership and Management for Technology Professionals Program (LAMP) – Offered by UC Irvine Extension – December 2001

From the OC Business Journal – August 13, 2001

The Leadership and Management for Technology Professionals Program has been enhancing the skills of company-nominated supervisors and managers for 16 years. This program is the cornerstone of the University of California Extension Leadership and Management Institute for Technology Professionals and will be offered by UC Irvine Extension for the third consecutive year.

What Is LAMP?
The Institute was created in direct response to California-based technology companies asking for "next steps" with regard to the development of their managerial staff. Its purpose is to provide a learning community where professionals discover solutions to the business challenges intrinsic to high technology organizations. LAMP, as one of the core endeavors of the Institute, presents and connects learning opportunities in an interactive classroom environment for working technology professionals.

The learning community for the Institute is composed primarily of approximately eight technology industries:

  • Computer
  • Software
  • Electronics
  • Biomedical
  • Aerospace
  • Energy
  • Telecommunication
  • Internet

Why Take the Program?
LAMP is differentiated from traditional executive development courses because the Institute and the curriculum are oriented exclusively toward technology industries.

To successfully maneuver changing market conditions, meet customer requirements, and develop proficient employees, technology professionals must possess a variety of leadership and management skills in addition to technical competency. Familiarity with areas such as negotiation, finance, human resources, marketing, and business strategy development is necessary for the enterprising technology professional. The ability to communicate with and influence the effectiveness and efficiency of work teams is also essential.

Through select faculty and guest speakers, current research materials and case studies, LAMP delivers timely, relevant, and specific applications to the technology professional and their unique environment.

Need to Develop Proficiency in These Areas?
The Institute approaches the mastery of management and leadership skill sets through the integrated steps of learning. Through LAMP, and California's technology and business communities, participants in the program develop strong proficiencies in

  • Managing and developing people
  • Building, evaluating, and leading high-performing teams
  • Communicating and influencing
  • Managing global projects
  • Applying financial fundamentals
  • Problem solving/negotiation in the technical environment
  • Market strategies (competitive analysis)
  • Applying ethics in technology organizations
  • Developing international awareness and perspective

LAMP is a six-month course, providing more than 150 hours of learning. The instructional approach stresses interaction, group problem-solving, and personal reflection. The program is as rigorous and challenging as its subject demands and is conducted at a level commensurate with University of California graduate courses.

Are Program Results Measurable?
Yes! LAMP has a proven track record. Each year more than one-third of graduating managers are promoted to broader levels of responsibility within their company soon after their LAMP experience. Virtually every participating company reports immediate improvement in managerial performance as a result of attendees applying the concepts learned in the program.

The next cohort group begins December 2001. Visit our LAMP Page for more information or call (949) 824-5736 or email aljeante@uci.edu.
