Renowned Author, Sol Stein, Instructs One-Day Writing Course At UC Irvine
Extension
Celebrated Editor, Author and Teacher Shares Success & Knowledge
with Orange County’s Aspiring Writers
IRVINE, Calif.–December 7, 2005 – UC
Irvine Extension presents one of the most outstanding authors and publishers
of the 20th century, Sol Stein, for a one-day masterclass to share his experience
and knowledge with aspiring writers. The course is open to the public and will
take place on Saturday, January 21 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at UC
Irvine Extension. From his long experience in advising and editing successful
writers like James Baldwin, Lionel Trilling, Eliza Kazan, Christy Brown and
David Frost, Sol Stein will explain techniques for achieving reader interest
and involvement in both fiction and nonfiction for today's readers.
“UC Irvine Extension is honored and pleased to have Sol Stein
return to our campus,” Dr. Kirwan Rockefeller, director of UC Irvine
Extension’s Arts and Humanities Program, said. “Sol has made
a number of stellar contributions to our creative writing program and
it's a wonderful treat to have this master writer and teacher bring his
enormous expertise, experience and passion to the Orange County community
of writers.”
Students of the one-day course will learn such skills as speeding up
the pace, tapping originality, creating credible dialogue, establishing
conflict, clarifying point of view, creating characters readers love
in fiction and establishing the authors’ voice in nonfiction. Stein
will also cover advanced point of view for today’s readers, the
right and wrong ways to revise a manuscript, how to maintain authority
with readers and additional techniques that have helped many of today’s
successful writers achieve their goals. Registered students will be able
to ask questions in advance up to one week before the masterclass on
January 21.
Stein has edited work for several diverse writers, has authored nine
novels himself and is an award-winning playwright whose work has been
produced on Broadway. In addition, he’s an anthologized poet and
the author of nonfiction books, screenplays and TV dramas. He was also
the recipient of the 1993 UC Irvine Extension Distinguished Instructor
Award.
“What stands between a writer's ambition and success is a firm
knowledge of the craft techniques developed by successful writers of
both fiction and nonfiction,” said Stein. “The mission of
the master class at UC Irvine Extension is to close that gap as much
as possible on a single day.”
