Uc Irvine Extension Presents A Joint Online Certificate Program In Decision Making For Climate Change

Offered in Cooperation with Four Top-Tier North American Universities; New Program Launches Autumn 2009

IRVINE, Calif. – July 8, 2009 – The University of California, Irvine Extension in conjunction with the University of Washington Educational Outreach, Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies and the University of British Columbia Continuing Studies announces the offering of a unique, new fully online continuing education certificate program titled, “Decision Making for Climate Change.” Available this autumn, the four-course online program offers content from leaders in the study of climate change.

“This program represents an unparalleled opportunity for municipal, regional, state and federal officials, environmental planners and managers, corporate operations and utility managers and consultants in the sustainability field,” explains Kirwan Rockefeller, Ph.D., director of the Certificate Program in Sustainability Leadership at UC Irvine Extension. “Participants will benefit from the combined expertise and resources provided by the collaboration of these four prestigious North American universities conducting studies on climate change that can be implemented as practical skills into real-life scenarios.”

Courses include:

o “Strategic Planning for Adaptation to Climate Change” – Presented by University of Washington. Designed to address strategic planning for adapting to and minimizing climate change, this course will share with participants how to map climate change to major sectors, understand the long-term lifecycle planning process, cost analysis, risk assessment, health, safety and equity issues and how to implement appropriate plans. This course will be offered in Autumn 2009.

o “Climate Literacy” – Presented by University of British Columbia. Content introduces factors in influencing climate including interactions among the atmosphere, oceans, solid earth and biosphere. Course addresses the causes of global warming, greenhouse gases, physical carbon flows, the carbon cycle, climate modeling and social impacts of climate change. This course will be offered in Winter 2010.

o “The Business of Mitigating Climate Change” – Presented by UC Irvine Extension. This course assesses the financial, environmental and business aspects of mitigation efforts. Topics covered will include measuring carbon footprints, identifying areas of mitigation including transportation, fuel usage, and facilities and selecting best tactics. Bottom line and cost/benefit carbon analysis will also be addressed. This course will be offered in Spring 2010. o “Policy Responses and Options” – Presented by Northwestern University. This course studies existing government policies such as the Kyoto Accord and the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). Lessons will focus on the approaches less developed nations are taking and the local approaches in the United States. This course will be offered in Summer 2010.
