UC Irvine Extension Offers Specially Designed CSET Tutorial Program

Available For the First Time Ever, New Study Program Developed for CSET Exam in Mathematics

IRVINE, Calif. – August 10, 2009 – With California’s critical shortage of qualified math teachers, the University of California, Irvine Extension has announced a new California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) in mathematics tutorial program for the fall 2009 quarter. This unique study program is offered on a one-to-one tutoring format and is available online to accommodate participants’ schedules. The program addresses the urgent need to help new and incumbent teachers prepare for and pass the CSET, a test which measures the subject matter competency of teachers seeking credentials to teach mathematics in California schools.

“This independent study model allows participants to fully grasp the content covered on the test,” says Angela Jeantet, director of UC Irvine Extension’s Education Programs Department. “The UCI Extension course instructor will provide comprehensive and subject-driven approaches to successfully prepare for the CSET exam.”

The program is offered in five-hour blocks and addresses gap-subject areas, guided examples, topic refreshers and diagnostic questions. Program instructor, Kiarash Shafe, M.S., is a UC Irvine Extension approved instructor and has taught in the field of mathematics for the past nine years. Shafe is also an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Fullerton, Saddleback College and Orange Coast College. In addition to teaching mathematics courses in algebra, statistics, trigonometry and calculus, Shafe has also contributed content to UCI’s OpenCourseWare CSET mathematics modules.

“With a personalized tutoring session, participants are able to work on areas of focus and skip subject areas they have already mastered,” says program instructor, Shafe. “Having the option to study at their own pace, participants are allowed the flexibility to fit this tutorial program into their busy schedules.”

The CSET mathematics tutorial program is ideal for those seeking a career change after a lay-off. Many in the fields of engineering and finance seeking to fill California’s need for more math teachers, are now able to better prepare for the test with this new study program.

Registration is now open. For more information about the CSET mathematics tutorial program, please contact Angela Jeantet at angela.jeantet@unx.uci.edu or call (949) 824-5414.
