UC Irvine Extension Helps Savy Project Managers More Effectively Utilize the Concepts of Systems Engineering
Course Provides a Systematic Approach to Effective Project Management
IRVINE, Calif. – February 16, 2007 – Project outcomes are determined by the decisions that project and program managers make. It is critical to project success that project managers use a logical decision-making approach when resolving project challenges. To meet the needs of project and program managers, UC Irvine Extension is offering a course entitled, “Systems Engineering for Project and Program Managers.” The course will be held every Wednesday from April 11 to May 30, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the UC Irvine campus.
The course will help project and program managers better understand the value of systems engineering in product development and project success, as well as how it impacts project management. Participants will gain the skills necessary to implement a structured, analytical decision-making methodology, as well as discover how processes relate to customer needs and are converted to producible product.
Course instructor and subject matter expert, Dennis Van Gemert has 12 years experience in process development and integration, systems engineering and integration, project and program management, launch and orbital vehicle design, trajectory design and astrodynamics, and systems architecture studies. Van Gemert holds master’s degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Project Management. He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) and has served on the Space Transportation and Systems Engineering Technical Committees of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He also serves on the Project Management Institute’s Organizational Project Management Maturity Model Development Team.
“NASA and the Department of Defense have used Systems Engineering for decades to manage requirements and ensure smooth integration of complex systems,” said Van Gemert. “This course has been custom designed to expose project managers to the best practices of Systems Engineering, enabling students to think from the systems perspective. In a world where the design and flawless integration of complex systems, within an environment of first-time quality, is essential to success; this is a vital skill set.”
