Thursday, May 26, 2016
11:00AM - 12:30PM

Watching professional sports provides excitement and has entertainment value. Betting on professional sports is ubiquitous. In the U.S. alone, professional and collegiate sports attract attention of many fans and gamblers. People who bet on the outcome of a sporting event have a vested interest in assessing the probability of win/loss. Due to recent advancements in the field of Predictive Analytics, models have been built which can compute the probabilities of such sports win/loss prospects. Join us for this webinar in which we will survey the literature and explore various Predictive Analytics models designed for sporting events. We will start by computing simple statistics of a game which has already been played. We will use correlation to detect statistical relationships between different metrics of the game. Regression models will be used with several predictor variables to estimate a metric. Since a game’s outcome is discrete, Logistic and Poisson regression methods are used frequently. Sentiment measurement and mining of Social Media data (Twitter) are also valuable data sources that can be used as one of the inputs to the predictor model. Predictive Analytics works best when the data is valid and accurate. We will also survey various fee-based data sources which offer professional sports data. We will conclude by analyzing the accuracy of prediction done by various models and also explore new ways by which prediction algorithms can be made more accurate.
