There are approximately 74 kilometers of wiring in a Boeing 737 aircraft and around 100 kilometers of wiring with over 3,500 connectors and 40,000 cable segments in a Boing 787 Dreamliner. What if some of these components were replaced by optical fibers? How much lighter would the aircraft be and how much energy would it save? Fiber optic technology is moving in this direction and today we see Fiber Optics being used to save not only space but also lower weight. Optical Fibers also guide light, and can be used in hundreds of diverse applications ranging from data transmission to diverse sensing technologies. Understanding how optical fibers work and how the properties of optical fibers can be used to implement telecommunication protocol to measure a wide range of physical effects in vital in todays ever advancing world.
